Joseph Stalin and Totalitarianism

Totalitarianism is a type of society governed by more than one ruler. Basically its a dictatorship ran by rulers who controlled your life and your decisions made everyday. Stalin became a leader after Lenin died. Below Lenin was Joseph Stalin and another friend. Stalin used totalitarianism to run the society. He used totalitarianism to rule soviet union.The way he did this was by building steel mills, electric power stations, and other industries needed in a strong modern state. He also made millions of peasants to give up their land and work on farms. This is when the five year plan came along. The Great Purges were a large numbers of deaths and people going to labor camps. The economy was increasing but many people's lives were given up for the rise of the Soviet Union.

Film Lesson: Doctor Zhivago

The film "Doctor Zhivago" depicted the Russian Revolution as the overthrown of Czar Nicholas II and the beginning of the Soviet Union. The Russians felt that they were being used and didn't feel like they were being treated fair . The lower class worked very hard to maintain Russia. They were working in the factories and making the technology. The rich people had all the advantages while the poor lived poorly. Dr.Zhivago later saw that the poor had to move in with the rich because the rich had more room. His action showed a lot of communism toward the poor people because they would all be sharing the same things.

Causes Of WWI.

When WWI began people weren't expecting this to lead on to another war. The war started off as "The Great War" which started off because of the rise of nationalism. The people were desperate for independence and they fought to rise to the top. Each country felt better and stronger than other countries.Each country thought their beliefs were better than the other countries belief. This has turned Frenchman against German and Russian against Austrian.

The Opium War

This war began because of The Europeans began importing Opium into Asia which made the Asians addicted to the drug. The drug is very addictive and causes a person to have an over whelming feeling and become excited. The British mainly wanted China's tea.So since the chinese were interested in the opium and the British wanted their tea it worked out and they started to trade with each other. The Chinese people mainly were very intrested in the drug although it was illegal to have ..The economy and their natural resources was going down.The emperor and the chinese government noticed this and wrote a letter to the british to tell them to stop selling opium to their people.The British refused which soon led to the Opium wars. The wars led to death. The chinese people were easily defeated when they had war. Since wars took place in sea the European had steam boats which allowed them to defeat China very easily. Because China lost the war, they were forced to sign the "treaty of Nanjing" which gave forein countries the right to deal with China.The chinese had to open up 11 more ports for foreign trade.

The White Mans Burden

The White Man's Burden was written by Rudyard Kipling. It is a poem that shows the diffrence between Black People and White people in a White persons view. Rudyard describes how White Poeple are the ones who are superior than others.It was said in his poem that it is the white mans duty to take control and civilize the people. He believed that the European had more power over any race and that the white poeples job was to introduce medicine to the people who have never heard of such things.It is also their job to introduce government and to create a government for them. Basically this poem is very racist toward the black people because it describes them to be less than the white people and that they were being imperialistic toward the people and the choices they were making such as culture and religion.

The Scramble for Africa

One of the most greatest conqueror of Africa was a man named Cecil Rhodes.He owned many companies which dealed with diamonds and gold mines. Europeans had the advantage of having more technology which helped them conquer Africa.The Africans only had their hand made spears and the Europeans had machine guns which could kill so many people within seconds. The Europeans also had steam boats which meant they were able to go around places much faster and takeover the land much faster. Africa had a lot of natural resources that the Europeans were in search of. Eurpoeans had took over which made them come together as a group and to think of a way to destroy the Europeans.Many parts of Africa were starting to lose the natural resources due to the Europeans taking most of it away.

This movie was a well developed movie that explained alot of the hardships many Europeans had to face during the time they were in Africa. In the movie you can see that they had no transportation and they either had to travel on foot or sometimes by camels. There was so many diseases that so many people got sick . Malaria was a very common disease caused by mosquitos. Every time they would go to sleep they would have to put a net so that they would be protected from getting infected. The Europeans had advanced power to the Africans because of their technology. The Europeans had guns which allowed them to take control of the African people. They also had steam boats which allowed them to conquer them easily.

In 1853 japan was visited by four US warships. These four ships were under control of Commodore Matthew Perry. Matthew Perry wanted Japan to trade with the United States and to let ships stop at Japans ports to stock up on supplies as well as to let there men seek refugee in Japan. Japan refused to allow this because they preferred to be alone. Mathew Perry did not give up so the next time he came to Japan he brought ships and hide the sails to show Japan that they were more advanced. He also brought an impressive naval force to show that the United States was more stronger. Japan seem to be intimidated by them so they refused to continue.

Karl Marx and Communism

Karl Marx believed that everyone should be treated the same. He believed in communism and he believed that this was a great idea to bring peace. Karl Marx despited the fact that people were judge by their social class in which they were born in . He hated that fact that some people were treated unfair because he thought that everyone should work for them selfs. The way the owners of factories treated their workers made Karl beleived that they were the "bad guys" for their harsh treatment. He believed that the workers who worked very hard where the " good guys". The communist manifesto was created by him in which he fought and let out his ideas about the way the industrial revolution was being handled.

Karl Marx was born in Germany in 1818. He was first a Jew and then along the years he became Christian. He believed in the rights of the people. He was very involved in the industrial revolution although he didn't like the way people were being treated. He was very active in living in a communist world in which he fought to make the world a better place to live in where every one would work fairly without getting payed less or more than deserved. He discovered that the communist society would avoid the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. He believed that everyone should be able to control them selfs and work for them selfs that being control by a capitalist and working for others.

Nationalism is the attitude that people have to their country when they care about their cultural background. Nationalism came around after the French Revolution when people began to understand the meaning of pride. Times have changed since people only believed in kings or empires. Nationalism also means the loyalty people have to their nation which makes them proud of where they come from or where they live. Different countries have different cultures and each individual celebrates their own religion according to where they come from. Being a part of their culture and being proud of their language, traditions or customs can make a certain person be nationalistic.

Simon Bolivar was a very dedicated man who was famous for helping fight independence for the people. He was a Latin American who visited many places of Europe, Spain, France and other countries in Latin America. His harsh punishments being sent to jail paid off at the end when he won the battle against Spain. Simon Bolivar gathered all his army and fought for the rights of his people. Since he brought independence from Spain he was able to make new countries , and one of them known as Bolivia.

The french revolution did promise democracy, but it took them a while for it to happen. There were problems on how to change france's society. There was the legislative assembly which were seperated into three groups.1)Radicals-wanted sweeping changes in government and proposed that common people have full power in a republic. The french revolution was first initiated on 1789 through 1799. It was divided into three groups known as estates. Each group was divided according to what their previous generation. The highest group was called the Clergy. These people lived off the money that the two lower classes had to pay. These people were religious leaders. The second class were the Noblemen.They shared honorary privileges such as the right to display their unique coat of arms and the right to wear a sword. The group were the peseants and middle class people. They had no freedom because they 1 were basically working for the clergy and not them selfs. This made them feel used. The enlightment ideas were seperated into three:equality,democracy,and liberty. Through out the years the people were becoming poorer and poorer and because the rich gained so much. In 1789, 6,000 Parisian women got mad over
the rising price of bread. They were so angry and furious that they turned against the king
and queen. Having many weapons the women and a many men
marched on Versailles. They broke into the palace and killed two
guards. The women demanded that Louis and Marie Antoinette come
to Paris, and so they did.

This is an example of the Geoncentric theory which stated that the earth was the center of the universe. The greeks believed that the planets moved around the sun clockwise and that the earth was motionless because noone felt the earth moving.

This is an example of the Heliocentric theory. In this theory it was believed that the earth did move around the sun and so did the other planets. The distance between the planets from the sun were determined by the size of the loops.

The Scientific method is a way of scientist to prove or discover something with observing and analyzing their ideas about the world. They work very carefully to try to make the theory most accurate as they can. The scientific method helps the scientist be more detailed in every way in order to conduct their experiments and have enough proof. The method is basically a guideline to lead you step by step. A scientist named Galileo used the scientific method to prove his hypothesis that all objects fell at the same speed. He conducted his experiment by going to the top of the leaning tower of piza and he dropped different rocks that weigh differently and they all fell at the same speed.

Evolution vs. Creation

The theory of Evolution is basically telling us about where we came from and why we are the way we are. The theory explains that we have slowly mutated through out the years humans have been around and that we evolve from our ancestors who are then passed to future generations. Not only do we mutate along the years, but over time the mutations accumulate that the results is a a different organism.

The theory of Creation is also telling us where we came from ,but is related to religious believing.
